About Mojigangas
Mojigangas are traditional giant puppets, that may reach 8–10 feet tall, made of papier-mâché, cloth, and lightweight frames. They are worn and carried by a performer who brings them to life through movement and dance. Mojigangas are a joyful tradition in Mexico and Latin America, used in weddings, fiestas, and especially during Día de los Muertos celebrations.
In Día de los Muertos processions, Mojigangas symbolize the connection between life and death. Their oversized, humorous, and playful presence reminds us that death is not to be feared but embraced with laughter, music, and community. They bring people together, turning remembrance into celebration, and ensure the spirits of our loved ones are honored with joy as well as reverence.
