Become a member of our committee!

Why This Committee Matters | The Latino Books Award Review Committee plays a vital role in shaping what young people across Rhode Island read

Committee members help curate a thoughtful, inclusive list of children’s and young adult books by Latino and Latinx authors and illustrators—books that reflect a wide range of identities, family structures, cultures, languages, and lived experiences.

This work matters. It requires care, consistency, and follow-through.

Who Should Consider Joining?

  • Teachers and school librarians
  • Educators, writers, artists, and storytellers
  • Community members who enjoy children’s and young adult literature
  • Readers who believe books can affirm identity and spark connection
  • Virtual meetings on the 1st Wednesday of every month starting in September from 6-7:30PM, and meet until May.
You do not need to be a literary expert. You do need to be a committed reader who can engage thoughtfully and reliably.

What Serving on the Committee Involves | We want prospective members to clearly understand what they are signing up for

Serving on the Latino Books Award Review Committee is a time-bound, responsibility-based commitment. Committee members are expected to:
  • Read assigned titles within established timelines
  • Attend scheduled committee meetings, either virtually or in person
  • Participate actively in discussions, sharing reflections and perspectives
  • Complete assigned evaluations or feedback forms
  • Communicate clearly if circumstances arise that affect participation

Time Commitment

The review period typically spans several months. Members should expect:
  • Regular reading assignments
  • A set number of scheduled meetings
  • Independent reading and reflection time between meetings
Specific dates, timelines, and expectations are shared in advance so members can assess availability before committing.

A Note on Commitment

The Latino Books Award relies heavily on a fully engaged review committee. Members who are unable to meet the responsibilities outlined above may be asked to step away so that the integrity of the process is maintained and the work remains equitable for all involved.

Why This Matters

The strength of the Latino Books Award depends on a committee that is engaged, reliable, and collaborative. Clear expectations help ensure that everyone’s time and contributions are respected—and that the process remains fair, thoughtful, and meaningful.

If you are excited about this work and able to commit the time and energy it requires, we would love to hear from you.
